Free 411 calls for Visually Impaired People

archives from August, 2002

Local phone companies that publish phone books must make an option available for the blind and visually impaired to get phone numbers at no charge. This is according to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) policy of 'functional equivalency.' While the FCC does not require a specific number of free 411 calls, I'm told that eligible consumers may be offered between 30 and an unlimited number of free 411 calls per month.

People that cannot read their phone book due to visual impairment or blindness are encouraged to contact their local telephone company regarding free 411 calls. If the number of calls offered by your local provider is not enough to meet your needs, you can ask them to provide more free calls under the FCC functional equivalency policy.
